The earilest form of a clip board dates to the 1870's and was called the Emerson Clip & File. You can only imagine what Mr. Emerson went through in trying to determine a name for his new office device.
Many machines were manufactured that worked on the same principle, holding document, receipts, bills and letter together in a temporary fashion until you could decide what to do with them. The development of clip boards really took off in the 1890's and improvements followed. Many machines were called Clip and Files, Temporary Files, Arch Files and Clip Boards
